Becky Higgins is a respected figure in the bed and breakfast world, known for her cooking and her warm, skilled hosting. She and her late husband Sam, celebrated in publications like Bon Appétit and Southern Living, turned this old dairy farm into the Chuckwagon Inn in 2000.
Today Becky carries on that legacy alongside her daughter Hillary, serving made-from-scratch breakfasts and sharing stories with guests from the 1854 stone farmhouse.
Fredericksburg blends German heritage, Texas wine country, and wide-open Hill Country. Here is how to make the most of your stay. Drive times are approximate, from the inn.

Explore President Lyndon B. Johnson's ranch, preserved as a living museum of Texas Hill Country life.
A world-class museum honoring the Pacific campaign of WWII, right on Main Street. Plan at least half a day.
At dusk, watch millions of bats stream out of an old railroad tunnel. A mesmerizing, only-in-Texas natural show.
Dozens of tasting rooms line the 290 wine road, including Slate Theory, Ron Yates, and the 200-acre Signor estate. Book weekend tastings in advance.
Try Altstadt Brewery for German-inspired brews and food, plus local favorites like Cabernet Grill and Hondo's on Main for Texas Hill Country cuisine.
Weekend dinner waits on Main Street can run long, make reservations for popular spots. Winery shuttles are a smart choice if you plan to taste at several stops.
From Main Street, take Hwy 16 south toward Kerrville, then turn right at the red light onto FM 2093 (Tivydale Rd). About a mile past the Shell station, stay right where Tivydale curves and look for our rock sign at Windsong and Tivydale.
Main Street and the 290 wine corridor jam up on weekends and festival days. FM 2093 curves, take it easy at night, and watch for deer on Hill Country roads after dark.
Some rooms have narrow, steep stairs and doorways not wide enough for wheelchairs, ask us if you have mobility needs. Summer hikes at Enchanted Rock demand early starts, water, and sun protection. No smoking anywhere on the property.
